Hita: A Journey Through Time at the Medieval Fair

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel back in time and experience a day in the Middle Ages?

We visited the Medieval Fair of Hita, an authentic immersion in history that you won’t easily find in tourist guides. This event, deeply rooted in Spanish local culture, is always vibrant with ongoing activities that truly make you feel as though you have stepped back into the Middle Ages.

Our Experience

The first time we heard about the Medieval Market of Hita was purely by chance. During a stop in a small village, a tour guide suggested we visit Hita, where the famous medieval festival was taking place. Following their advice, we went without much expectation, but what we found there was simply fascinating! We were so enchanted that the following year we decided to return and stay overnight, determined to enjoy every moment of the festival, both day and night.

The entire town vibrates with a medieval spirit; it’s as though every corner of Hita is celebrating. There’s live music, dancing, and plays happening in the streets all the time. While we were having a drink in the central square’s bar, a group of teenagers dressed as little devils started circulating among the crowd, playing pranks and bringing laughs and scares wherever they went. Shortly after, a grand parade took over the streets, leading everyone to the site where the exciting medieval battle was about to take place.

The highlight of the festival for us was the incredible masks worn during the battle between sea and land creatures. We saw masks of octopuses, chickens, and many other animals, all extremely detailed and beautiful. This unique experience made Hita earn a special place in our hearts, and we understood why the Medieval Market of Hita is considered the best in the region.

How to Get to Hita

The most practical way to reach Hita is by car, with the journey taking approximately one hour from Madrid. Unfortunately, public transport information is limited, and we couldn’t find direct routes connecting Hita with Madrid.

Upon arrival in Hita, you’ll find plenty of parking at the entrance of the town.

Where to Eat at the Medieval Fair of Hita

Next to the Casa Museo del Arcipreste de Hita, you will find a barbecue stall serving specialties such as chorizo, chips, and other local dishes. However, it’s important to keep in mind that Spanish lunch hours, between 2 and 4 pm, are usually very busy. Avoiding these hours could save you from a long wait.

Hita also offers several restaurants celebrating the richness of the local gastronomy. Given the popularity of the festival, it’s advisable to plan your visit in advance and make reservations to ensure a smooth dining experience.

For vegetarians, it might be a bit trickier, as meat is the local speciality. In this case, we recommend making reservations at the restaurants, which offer more options than the barbecue stall.

Where to Stay

Although Hita is close to Madrid, we recommend staying overnight in the town to make the most of the Medieval Market’s evening events. Staying locally allows you to enjoy the local cuisine and beers without worrying about transport. Consider booking local inns or guesthouses for a more authentic and convenient experience. Here’s a suggestion (the only one we know):

Pousada de Rosa, em Hita

La Posada de Rosa

This is the inn where we stayed. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of the festival but still close enough to walk. The rooms are simple but clean.

Brief Historical Context

Medieval markets are an ancient tradition, reviving the essence of the old meetings of merchants and artisans that took place in Medieval European towns. These events are more than just fairs; they are cultural celebrations that aim to recreate the atmosphere of a time when everyday life revolved around these markets. In Hita, this tradition is not only preserved but also enriched, offering a true journey back in time.

The Medieval Festival of Hita began in 1961, with a performance of a classic Spanish literary work. This annual event transforms the entire town into a medieval theatrical setting, with a variety of activities ranging from outdoor theatre, medieval music and dances, to stylized dinners and tournaments. Having been recognised as a National Tourist Interest Festival, the event offers a fully immersive cultural experience, allowing every visitor to feel part of the medieval magic.
