Fuente Dé: A cable car ride to the sky!

Imagine a place where dramatic mountain landscapes meet a touch of adventure. That’s Fuente Dé. Tucked away in the Picos de Europa National Park in Cantabria, this spot is a real gem for nature lovers who want to feel on top of the world, or at least a little closer to the sky.

How to Get There

If you’re in Santander, the capital of Cantabria, the drive to Fuente Dé takes around two hours. From Madrid, it’s roughly a five-hour journey by car, so it might be worth combining the trip with stops in other towns along the way.

Another option is to take a train or bus to Potes, the nearest town, and from there either rent a car or take a taxi to Fuente Dé.

A friendly heads-up:
There’s virtually no direct public transport to Fuente Dé, so having a car will make things much easier. Plus, the drive through the Picos de Europa is stunning. Winding roads open up to incredible views, and depending on the season, you might even spot patches of snow along the way.

Personally, I found the journey to Fuente Dé just as impressive as the destination itself. Sheer rock walls, sunlight filtering through the mountains and a river running alongside the road make it a memorable drive.

Best Time to Visit

Fuente Dé is beautiful all year round. Snow-covered peaks in winter, warm autumn tones across the mountains… but if your vibe is hiking, lush greenery and milder temperatures, spring and summer are ideal. The best months to go are from May to October, when the weather is more stable and the views from the top are at their best.

Keep in mind that high season runs from 1 July to 30 September, Easter week and from 28 March to 1 April. Usual opening hours are Monday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, and weekends from 9 am to 5 pm.

Things to Do

Now for the good part: what to do in Fuente Dé!

Fuente Dé Cable Car: This is the star attraction. The cable car takes you up to 1,823 metres, with jaw-dropping views of the Picos de Europa. The ride takes under four minutes, covering a height difference of 753 metres at a speed of 10 m/s. And at the top? Get ready for surreal landscapes and countless photo opportunities.

Hiking and Walking Trails: After the cable car ride, you can choose from several trails to explore the area. Some are easy and relaxed, while others require a bit more fitness. The route to the Áliva Refuge is one of the most popular.

Photography and Views: It might sound obvious, but honestly… you’ll want to stop every few steps to take a photo or simply take in the vast scenery. I stopped several times myself just to soak it all in and capture the moment.

Coffee with a View: At the top, there’s a café and restaurant where you can enjoy a warm drink while taking in the breathtaking surroundings. It’s the kind of moment that stays with you.

Souvenir Shopping: Next to the cafe, there’s a small shop where you can pick up souvenirs to remember your visit.

Where to Stay: If you want to stay close to Fuente Dé, the Parador de Fuente Dé is the best option. It’s right next to the cable car and offers stunning views. For something more budget-friendly or lively, Potes has a range of hotels, guesthouses and even hostels.

The Fuente Dé Cable Car is the highlight of the visit.

Try the Local Cuisine

Cantabria is well known for its cheeses and the “cocido lebaniego“, a hearty and delicious local dish. My personal tip is to try the quesada, a regional dessert that quickly became my favourite among Spanish sweets

Tips for Visitors

  • Dress for the weather: Even in summer, it can be chilly at the top. In winter, it gets properly cold. Wearing layers is always a good idea.
  • Arrive early: The cable car can get very busy during peak season, so it’s best to go without rushing.
  • Check the weather forecast: If it’s too cloudy, you won’t see much. Tickets can be rescheduled up to two days in advance.
  • Be ready to walk: Even without a long hike, it’s worth getting lost in the area.
  • Enjoy the drive: The road there is an attraction in itself, full of stunning views at every turn.
  • Leave with time to spare: The road is narrow and if there’s maintenance, you might be stopped at temporary traffic signals.
  • Travelling with pets: Pets are welcome, but they must travel in their own carrier on the cable car, and a small fee applies.
