Calendar of events and popular festivals in Spain in MAY 2026

May is the month when Spain blossoms. Winter gives way to milder temperatures across almost the entire country, the days are longer and cities take on a different energy. The countryside regain their color, squares gets busy at night and the events calendar reaches one of its richest points of the year.

The month doesn't have a single protagonist the way April does with Holy Week, but it has something better: three completely different celebrations happening at the same time. The Patios de Córdoba, the Feria del Caballo de Jerez and the Fiestas de San Isidro in Madrid are events that have nothing in common with each other, and all three are worth a trip on their own. Add to that the season's music festivals and a calendar of local celebrations that, as always in Spain, is impossible to exhaust.

If you're planning your trip or already live here, this is the agenda of what you can't miss in Spain in May 2026.

Patios de Córdoba

May 4 to 17

Once a year, residents of Córdoba's old town open the doors of their homes to the public. Inside, there are courtyards covered in flowers, geraniums, carnations and gitanillas arranged on walls, balconies and the city's typical stone flooring. Entry is free at all of them, with no reservation needed.

The Fiesta de los Patios has existed since 1921, when the city council organized a competition among residents for the first time. In 2012, UNESCO recognized it as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. What makes the event special is not just the beauty of the courtyards themselves, but the fact that they are lived-in spaces, maintained by families who spend months caring for every plant.

In 2026, the patios can be visited from 11am to 2pm and from 6pm to 10pm. The best neighborhoods to explore are San Basilio, Santa Marina, San Lorenzo and parts of the Judería, near the Mosque-Cathedral. Each area has its own character.

The festival is not only about flowers. During the two weeks, Córdoba organizes a parallel flamenco program outdoors, with evening shows in historic spaces such as the Casa de las Campanas and the Puerta del Puente. Most are free.

It's worth arriving before the heat sets in, as May in Córdoba can be hot, and the lines at the most popular patios can be very... very long.

Feria del Caballo de Jerez

May 9 to 16

The Feria del Caballo is the most important event in Jerez de la Frontera and one of the most recognized in all of Andalusia. Declared of International Tourist Interest, it began as a livestock market and today is a full week of casetas, horses, flamenco and Jerez wine.

The fairground is located in Parque González Hontoria, where a temporary city of casetas is set up each year. Unlike the Feria de Abril in Seville, most of the casetas in Jerez are open to the public, which makes visiting much easier for those coming from outside. The atmosphere is that of a street fair, neighborhood-style, with tables outside and constant music.

The highlight of the fair is the horse and carriage parade that takes place every day. From morning until dusk, the fairground gets busy with riders and elegant carriages moving along the albero. It's a show the city takes very seriously, with several competitions throughout the week.

For food, the must-haves are pescaíto frito, tortillitas de camarones and berza jerezana. To drink, a chilled fino or a rebujito. The fair ends with fireworks on the last night.

Fiestas de San Isidro em Madrid

May 8 to 15

San Isidro Labrador is the patron saint of Madrid, and the festivities in his honor are one of the most traditional celebrations in the capital. They take place every May across several points in the city, with two main centers being the Pradera de San Isidro and Las Vistillas. It's essentially a big street party full of food stalls, drinks, cultural performances and shows. It's a lot of fun!

One thing that really stands out is the traditional Madrid outfit. Women wear polka-dot dresses, embroidered shawls and carnations in their hair (chulapas), while men wear tight trousers, a waistcoat and a flat cap (chulapos). Meanwhile, the Plaza de Las Ventas hosts the San Isidro bullfighting season, considered the most important in the world on the bullfighting calendar.

We have a full article about our experience at the Fiestas de San Isidro, with all the practical details to make the most of it.

Traditional and local festivals

There's always something happening somewhere in Spain, and in May a good part of it revolves around flowers. Spring in full bloom inspires celebrations that fill streets, balconies and courtyards with color across several cities at the same time. Here are the most recognized events of the month, but almost every town has its own celebration at this time of year.

Fiesta Medieval de Ibiza | May 7 to 10: The walled old town of Ibiza, Dalt Vila, hosts a medieval market, shows and historical reenactments within its 16th-century walls.

Girona Temps de Flors | May 9 to 17: For several days, courtyards, monuments and streets of Girona's historic center are transformed into floral installations created by artists and local residents.

Feria del Libro de Madrid | May 29 to June 14: The Parque del Retiro hosts the 85th edition of the fair, with hundreds of stalls from bookshops and publishers, signing sessions and literary activities. It's one of the longest and most beloved cultural events in the capital.

Emerita Lvdica (Mérida, Badajoz) | May 18 to 24: The Roman city of Mérida hosts the 16th edition of Extremadura's most important historical reenactment festival, with a Roman market, battles and shows among the ruins.

L'Aplec del Caragol (Lleida) | May 22 to 24: One of Catalonia's largest gastronomic events, dedicated to snails. It brings together more than 200,000 people to eat, drink and celebrate outdoors.

Romería del Rocío (Almonte, Huelva) | May 22 to 25: One of the most spectacular pilgrimages in Spain, with brotherhoods from across Andalusia arriving on horseback and by carriage to the village of El Rocío.

Feria de Córdoba | May 23 to 30: Two weeks after the Patios, Córdoba celebrates again with its annual fair, casetas, sevillanas and long nights at the fairground.
