October is when autumn properly settles in across Spain. Temperatures drop, the summer season winds down, and the festival calendar turns to the harvest, the hunt and seafood.
Two dates anchor the month. The 12th, a national holiday, when Zaragoza celebrates El Pilar, and the 31st, when Halloween meets traditions that were here long before it.

October Highlights
Fiestas de San Froilรกn
4 to 12 October - Lugo
San Froilรกn draws more than a million people to Lugo over nine days, with a programme of over a hundred free events honouring the city's patron saint. The heart of it is the food, with a row of stalls in Parque Rosalรญa de Castro serving the classic polbo รก feira at prices anyone can afford.

- The patron saint's day is 5 October, a local holiday in Lugo.
- Octopus prices are capped by the city council. In 2026 a 250g portion costs โฌ15, with bread and potatoes at โฌ1.50 each.
- Domingo das Mozas, on the 11th, is the big day, given over to traditional Galician dress and folklore, with a parade through the old town.
- The free concerts are at Horta do Seminario, featuring Malรบ, Nil Moliner, Celtas Cortos, Santiago Auserรณn and Juan Magรกn.
- On the 12th there's a medieval market beside the cathedral, followed by fireworks over the Roman walls.
- The octopus stalls stay up in Parque Rosalรญa de Castro for the whole festival.
- Worth knowing: Leรณn also celebrates San Froilรกn, since the saint was born in Lugo but served as bishop of Leรณn. The Leรณn version is far smaller, built around Las Cantaderas, a parade of decorated carts and banners on Sunday 4 October.

Fiestas del Pilar
10 to 18 October - Zaragoza
Zaragoza honours its patron saint, the Virgen del Pilar, with nine days of festivities recognised as being of International Tourist Interest. The centrepiece is the Ofrenda de Flores, when thousands of people in traditional dress walk through the city to lay flowers before the Virgin, building an enormous floral mantle in Plaza del Pilar. On the busiest days the city's population almost doubles.

- The big day is 12 October, a national holiday, and in 2026 it falls on a Monday, so the whole country gets a long weekend.
- The Ofrenda de Flores takes place on the 12th and anyone can take part. There are two routes to the square, one for registered groups and one for individuals, both well marked on the day.
- Flowers are handed over between 6:45am and 8pm. The busiest stretch is 10am to 2pm, so go early or late afternoon to avoid the longer queues.
- Every year a guest country contributes part of the cultural programme. In 2026 it's Venezuela.
- The major concerts are at Espacio Zity, in the Valdespartera grounds, from the 9th to the 17th, with Myke Towers, Saiko, Taburete, Love of Lesbian, Ana Mena, Juan Magรกn and Omar Courtz. Full passes sold out in five minutes, but single-day tickets are still available.

"Halloween" in Spain
31 October
The first thing to know is that Halloween as most people picture it, children in costume asking for sweets, arrived here fairly recently from the United States. That version is now common in schools and neighbourhoods, but Spain also has regional traditions tied to the dead and to the arrival of winter, falling at the same time. We've grouped them here under the Halloween heading, though each has its own origins and rituals, from Celtic roots in the north to Catholic customs elsewhere. These are the ones we find most interesting.
Where it's celebrated
- Ourense, 31 October. The Galician Samaรญn takes over the streets from 5pm until the early hours, with around three hundred costumed performers scattered across the city, live music and the Santa Compaรฑa parade. We've been, and you can read our full account here.
- Soria, 23 October to 2 November. Now in its 41st year, the Festival de las รnimas revolves around Bรฉcquer's legend of the Monte de las รnimas, with guided theatrical walks, horror readings and a medieval parade on the 31st.
- Cรกdiz, 26 October. For Tosantos, stallholders at the Mercado Central and the Virgen del Rosario market build satirical scenes out of fish, fruit and meat, invariably poking fun at politicians and the news.

Music Festivals
October closes out the season with mid-sized festivals, almost all with Spanish line-ups, in cities that rarely feature on the summer circuit.

Duro Festival
Music: techno and hard techno

Catalonia's biggest techno festival, with more than 60 artists across three stages, held inside the Montmelรณ racing circuit. This year's line-up features Ben Klock, Kobosil, Klangkuenstler, Rooler, Alarico and Vendex.

Village Festivals and Curious Traditions
Beyond the big events, October brings dozens of festivals across the country, each with a tradition found nowhere else. These are the ones we find most interesting.
Moros y Cristianos de Crevillent (Alicante) - 2 to 5 October: twelve groups of local residents, known as comparsas, re-enact Crevillent's transfer to the crown of Aragon in the 13th century.
Ceremonia de las Cantaderas (Leรณn) - 4 October: a re-enactment of the legend of the hundred maidens that Christian kings once paid as tribute to the caliphs. The young women parade to the cathedral cloister, after which representatives of the city council and the church argue over whether the offering is an obligation or a voluntary gesture. By tradition, the argument is never settled.
Fiesta del Marisco (O Grove, Galicia) - 1 to 12 October: the 63rd edition of a festival that fills the town with stalls serving octopus, mussels, scallops and spider crab at reasonable prices, drawing more than 100,000 people.
Semana Cervantina (Alcalรก de Henares) - 8 to 12 October: the old town becomes a period market with more than 500 stalls stretching two kilometres. Entry is free, and the city is half an hour from Madrid.
Desarme (Oviedo) - 16 to 25 October: for ten days every restaurant in the city serves the same menu: chickpeas with cod and spinach, tripe, and rice pudding. The big day is the 19th. There are also re-enactments of the Carlist battles involving more than 150 performers.
Fiesta de la Rosa del Azafrรกn (Consuegra, Toledo) - 23 to 26 October: timed to the saffron harvest, with a flower-stripping contest and wheat milled in a 16th-century windmill, up on the same ridge as the windmills from Don Quixote.
รltimo Lunes de Octubre (Gernika, Basque Country) - 26 October: the largest agricultural fair in the Basque Country, with around 900 producer stalls and competitions for cheese, honey and txakoli, the local white wine, alongside improvised verse contests and Basque rural sports.
El Mariquelo (Salamanca) - 31 October: a man climbs the tower of the New Cathedral without safety equipment, in thanks that the 1755 Lisbon earthquake claimed no lives in the city.
