Puerto Espacial: I went without knowing what to expect and left in love

While researching what to do for a getaway to celebrate our 3 years together, I found this option. Since I am drawn to rather random things, that is how I discovered Puerto Espacial.

I was scouring for things to do around Valladolid because the city is beautiful, but I wanted to explore the countryside a bit. This name appeared almost by accident in the results. A Star Wars exhibition in a castle, in a tiny village of fewer than a thousand inhabitants in the middle of Castilla y León. Honestly? I thought it was far too strange not to go.

And well, it ended up being one of my favourite activities of this trip.

The story behind the place

Before talking about the visit itself, it is worth sharing where all this came from because the origin of the place is as cool as the final result.

During the pandemic, sculptor Juan Villa and his team found themselves without work overnight, with the audiovisual sector completely at a standstill. To avoid going stir-crazy during lockdown, they began creating figures and characters from the Star Wars universe as a pure hobby, without any larger plan. The problem was that the collection did not stop growing. Suddenly, they had dozens of pieces piled up in the studio and needed to do something with them.

Juan Villa already had experience with this type of project as he is the same sculptor behind Castillo Encantado), another fantastic themed exhibition located just a few minutes away. When the opportunity arose to occupy an old abandoned restaurant in Valoria la Buena (a building that the owner had decorated with local medieval stones to give it the appearance of a castle), the project took on proportions that even they had not imagined. After two years of intense work, Puerto Espacial opened its doors. It continues to grow even today, with new characters being added over time.

It is the kind of project born from genuine love for something. You can feel that in every corner of the exhibition.

How to get there

Puerto Espacial is located in Valoria la Buena, in the province of Valladolid. From Madrid, the car journey takes around 2 hours via the A-1 towards Burgos, then heading towards Valladolid. It is a quiet and very beautiful route across the Castilian meseta.

A good tip is to combine the visit with a stop in Valladolid, which is only 28 km from Valoria la Buena and is well worth a few hours of sightseeing. You can do everything in a single day without any stress.

There is free parking on-site, so you can easily travel by car.

Address: km 1 of the VA-103 Road, Valoria la Buena. Put it in the Sat Nav and you cannot miss it.

Tickets and opening times

The prices are very affordable:

  • Adults: €9.50
  • Children aged 3 to 11: €5
  • Under 3s: free

You can buy tickets directly at the box office upon arrival without prior reservation, and they accept both card and cash.

Regarding opening times, from September to June: Fridays from 17:00 to 21:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00. During the summer, the hours change slightly, so it is worth checking the website before you go.

What to expect inside

I will be honest with you. I am no Star Wars expert. I know the basics: I have watched some of the films and I know who Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are, but I am far from being the type of fan who memorises lore and recognises every character by name. I went in without great technical expectations and left absolutely impressed by the artistic work.

The visit is self-guided, but there is a suggested order of rooms with little arrows scattered along the way that say "This is the Way" (a reference to the series The Mandalorian). It is a small detail that says everything about the care with which the place was designed.

Throughout the route, you pass through completely different settings. There is an extraterrestrial market full of creatures from across the galaxy, a cantina (with that classic Star Wars intergalactic bar vibe), an ice cave, a palace, and a hangar with ship replicas that will leave anyone speechless. Each space has its own atmosphere, lighting, and soundscape. It is exactly this layer of audio that transforms the visit from simply "seeing cool figures" to "being inside the universe". You find yourself walking slowly, paying attention to the sounds, not wanting to miss a single detail.

The figures themselves have a level of detail that is quite intimidating. Each character was sculpted by hand with textures, expressions, and finishes that look like professional film production because, in practice, that is exactly what Juan Villa does.

The Easter eggs along the way

Oh, and there is an extra bit of charm that I loved. If you pay attention, you will find characters from other science fiction universes hidden among the settings throughout the exhibition. I will not give away which ones they are so as not to spoil the surprise, but do keep an eye out, as part of the fun is discovering who appears where they are not expected. It is the kind of detail that shows the creators made this with a lot of affection and a great sense of humour.

For those who are not Star Wars fans (like me)

This was the point that surprised me the most. I went without any expectation of being moved and left wanting to rewatch the films I had already seen and finally watch the ones I had skipped. There is something in the quality of the work and the way each environment was built with such care that sparks curiosity even in those who did not grow up obsessed with the saga.

If you have children, then it is a guaranteed hit, but do not be fooled into thinking it is "just for kids". Adults with no special connection to Star Wars leave having spent an hour completely enchanted. The magic of the place does not depend on you knowing every single detail.

The souvenir shop

Of course there is a shop! And of course it is difficult to leave without buying anything. There are themed products for all tastes and budgets, which is a great option for anyone wanting a different kind of travel souvenir that is neither the typical fridge magnet nor a generic ceramic mug. But if you really want one, they do have magnets and mugs too. lol.

Is it worth it?

Absolutely. For less than 10 euros, you get an experience that rivals much more hyped and expensive exhibitions. It is the kind of place that rarely appears on itineraries, it almost stayed off mine to, and which ultimately became one of my favourite moments of the trip.

If you are passing through the Valladolid region, put Puerto Espacial on your list. It might be a small stop on the map, but it is far too big to ignore.

May the Force be with you.
